The company recently completed the award-winning $3 billion CLEM7 tunnel in Brisbane. Its portfolio also includes the Graham Farmer Freeway in Perth (a cut and cover tunnel) and the M5 East Tunnel and Cross City Tunnel (both roadheader tunnels) in Sydney.
The CLEM7 tunnel was completed seven months ahead of schedule and will carry up to 100,000 vehicles a day.
Baulderstone constructed these infrastructure projects as a member of joint ventures.
Internationally renowned tunnelling expert Andy Tauschinger has been appointed head of the tunnelling division.
Baulderstone managing director Rick Turchini said it was a business priority to establish a tunnelling discipline within the company’s civil engineering capability because of the specialist expertise that tunnelling projects required.
“Andy’s experience, combined with Baulderstone’s success with project management of transport infrastructure, means that the overall value proposition of our tunnelling division is unparalleled in the Australian market,” he said.
“Demand for tunnels is expected to grow as existing transport infrastructure in metropolitan cities becomes increasingly overcrowded.
“In addition, the trend towards switching to carbon emission-free modes of transport – rail and metro, which usually have to run underground in inner-city areas – creates demand for tunnelling expertise.”
